World Cup Round of 32 — Drama in Houston and Boston
Today delivered everything you want from knockout football — a stoppage-time winner and the biggest upset of the tournament so far.
Brazil 2–1 Japan (Houston)
Japan stunned the crowd by taking the lead in the first half, but Brazil responded after the break. Just when it looked like extra time was inevitable, Gabriel Martinelli popped up in stoppage time to snatch a 2–1 win and send the Selecao through to the Round of 16.
Germany 1–1 Paraguay (4–3 pens) — Boston
The shock of the tournament. Julio Enciso put Paraguay ahead with a 42nd-minute header, and they held that lead deep into the second half. Kai Havertz equalized for Germany to force extra time, but neither side could find a winner.
In the shootout, Paraguay held their nerve while Havertz, Woltemade, and Tah all missed for Germany. Paraguay advance 4–3 on penalties in one of the biggest World Cup upsets in recent memory — the four-time champions are out in the Round of 32.
Tonight: Netherlands vs Morocco
The day wraps up with a heavyweight clash between two top-7 ranked sides. The Dutch have looked sharp in the group stage, and Morocco will be dangerous on the counter. Kickoff is later tonight — that result will be in tomorrow's post.
