But the announcement from Pavan Davuluri, Microsoft's President of Windows and Devices, isn't nostalgia — it's a hard admission that Windows 11 has been carrying too much weight for too long, and the company is finally doing something structural about it. The scale of the problem is worth naming, because Microsoft has been quiet about it for years. Windows 11 idles at close to 6GB of RAM on an 8GB system — meaning three-quarters of your memory is spoken for before you've launched a single app. On a 16GB machine, idle consumption climbs above 10GB, which is more than the entire RAM capacity of the laptop I wrote my college thesis on. The "web tech in the desktop" approach that defined the Windows 8 and 10 eras was sold as the future — write once, run everywhere, update instantly. But the mobile industry already learned this lesson the hard way years ago, when Facebook famously admitted that switching from HTML5 to native on iOS was the single biggest performance improvement they'd ever shipped. But the screen and the battery have quietly become the components that define a laptop experience, and an OS that chews through RAM in the background is an OS that chews through battery, too. It's not the kind of thing that makes for a flashy keynote demo, but it's the kind of thing that makes a computer feel faster six months from now without anyone having to buy new hardware.
The gaming angle is worth mentioning, too, because it's where the RAM math gets most concrete.
