It's also IP65/IP68 rated with Gorilla Glass Victus 2, which matters more than you'd think for the argument Sony is making.

For years, the industry justified removing the headphone jack as an engineering trade-off: losing the port supposedly freed up internal space and made water resistance easier. Sony quietly demolishes that narrative by shipping a phone that has both an IP68 rating and a jack in the same chassis. The real driver was never really about space or waterproofing — it was the accessory economy. A wireless earbud is a repeatable purchase with a healthy margin and its own upgrade cycle, and once the industry committed to Bluetooth as the default, the wired port became a liability to be managed rather than a feature to be kept. That's a business choice, not a physics problem, and the Xperia 10 VIII is the clearest reminder of it in years.

The microSD slot is doing a different kind of work. There's a strategy buried in that seeming contradiction, and it only works because of Sony's unusual market position. Sony doesn't officially sell Xperia phones in the United States at all, which frees it from chasing the mass-market middle ground that Google, Samsung, and Apple have to fight over. Instead it can serve a narrow, opinionated audience — audiophiles who still want Hi-Res Audio, LDAC, aptX Adaptive, and 360 Reality Audio through a wired jack, and photographers who want a real shutter button. The audio angle deserves more credit than it usually gets in these comparisons. What makes the Pixel 10a and the Xperia 10 VIII such a clean pairing is that neither is obviously wrong. Google's bet is that software is now good enough that the spec sheet barely matters — that a great camera pipeline and a clever OS can carry a modest chassis. Sony's bet is that the physical layer still matters — that a jack, a shutter button, and an SD slot are the kind of utility you only notice when they're gone. Most buyers will be happier with the Pixel.
