"Apple's foldable is reportedly the 'iPhone Duo' at $2,000 — and the name is half the story"
Hours before Apple's first iPhone launch event since John Ternus became CEO, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reports that the company's long-rumored foldable will be called the iPhone Duo, starting at $2,000 for a 256GB model and climbing to around $3,000 for 2TB. Shipping is said to begin as soon as October, in two colors — white and dark blue. For a device that has spent months going by the placeholder name "iPhone Ultra," the shift to "Duo" is the detail worth paying attention to.
That's because "Duo" is not a fresh name. Microsoft used it for the Surface Duo line of dual-screen devices, a category it eventually abandoned, and Google borrowed the same word for one of its many short-lived messaging apps. Apple reaching for a name with that much baggage is a quiet statement of intent: the company clearly believes it can succeed where the dual-screen concept has repeatedly stalled. Names are rarely accidental at Apple, and reviving one tied to a defunct rival's product reads as confidence rather than coincidence.
The price tells its own story. A $2,000 starting point puts the iPhone Duo above the base Google Pixel 11 Pro Fold and Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8, both of which start at $1,899, but just below the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra at $2,099.99 — a deliberately narrow band at the very top of the market. The more revealing number is the gap between tiers: $1,000 separating 256GB from 2TB of storage is classic Apple margin strategy, and it signals that the foldable is meant to be a halo product anchoring the premium end of the lineup just as the holiday quarter begins. An October ship date is, in effect, a bet on fourth-quarter revenue.
On the software side, the rumors point to side-by-side iPhone apps, iPad-style multitasking, and Apple Pencil support — and that is where the real test will happen. Foldable hardware has matured to the point where every hinge is impressive; the thing that still separates a category-defining device from an expensive curiosity is whether developers actually use the extra screen real estate. Apple's advantage is a software ecosystem disciplined enough to make multitasking feel native, but the device still has to prove that a folding iPhone is more than an iPad that fits in a pocket.
All of this is rumor until the keynote confirms it, and Apple has said nothing officially beyond the event itself. If the details hold, the iPhone Duo will land as the most expensive iPhone ever shipped — and the clearest test yet of whether a folding screen can justify a price the rest of the market has spent years creeping toward. You can watch the announcement unfold on Apple's official events page, where the company will presumably put the "Duo" name to rest one way or another.
